Message in a Bottle

A boy and his bottle message
No, not the the movie or the song. But a real-life tale of a 9-year old boy finding a real-life bottle with a real-life message.

The youngster was walking on the beach near his home in Ireland and found a 2-liter bottle with a message inside.

The message in a bottle had been pitched into the water in 2004 by two
Canadian girls on vacation along the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec.
It had taken eight years to travel some 2,500 miles before washing ashore
near the tiny village of Passage East in County Waterford, Ireland.”

The e-mail address in the message no longer worked, but as word of the bottle got out, the two girls heard their bottle had been found...

Tuesday night, Oisin sat down to chat with them in a much
more modern way—online, via Skype.

"Bonjour!" he said cheerily, before showing them their old note
and the crushed, green plastic bottle he found it in. The young
women leaned in close to their computer to get a better look.

The story links to another, about a 98-year old message in a bottle being setting the world record, but the link doesn't work. This one does.

Got 5 min:17 sec? Want to watch the "Libya Bump" unfold? With a preface by ex-President Clinton?

"President Obama and his administration have failed to give the American
public clear answers on the terrorist attack that happened on 9/11 in Benghazi, Libya.
This is a timeline of the events that occurred surrounding the attack on U.S. soil at
our consulate in Libya. It's been 40 + days since the attack with no clear answers
and no clear leadership from President Obama."

It's on this video.

A man who knows something about business and job creation

Yes, BO, he built it.

This is from the YouTube page...
"Home Depot Founder Bernie Marcus shares his concerns for our nation and how frightened he is by what Pres. Obama's policies mean for America, especially for our children and future generations. In particular, the lack of job creation and rising home foreclosures are limiting the American dream for millions of families.

As someone who has taken Home Depot from one store to one of the largest companies in the world, and as someone who has hired millions of people over many years in business, Bernie is in a unique position to know which policies can bring about economic growth and prosperity and how badly Pres. Obama's policies are hurting us."

The #1 reson Dads most like about having Sons

As Joey B might say, "It's a three letter word"...... T.O.Y.S.

Having a son is the coolest thing. You get to buy all the stuff you never had when you were a kid. You get to buy stuff you never even dreamed of when you were a kid. And his Mom (your Bride) can't complain! "What, you think we should deprive him of this? What kind of parent are you? Think about all the trauma! Jeeze." Man, you talk about Win/Win! This is game-set-match!

Radio controlled stuff -- cars, trucks, airplanes, helicopters, boats, you name it, they got it -- is right up there at the top of the "Things Dad Must Get For Son" list. Some times the old "Some Assembly Required" slows up your his pleasure. Think of it as Delayed Gratification. It's always worth the delay. And frustration.

Then, he reaches Adulthood (whatever that means) and he carries forward those Dad/Son bonding experiences (I once read that some where) into the realm of "Making a Living." He makes movies, gets hooked up with a video game producer and makes a lot of $$$. All because of you, Dad. You set him on his career path. And got a lot of kicks in the process! (I wonder what he'll send me for Fathers' Day. Hope it's not another crummy tie.)

For your listening pleasure

Wurlitzer juke box. Not online at this time.

Sometimes, while clicking around, I like to listen to music. I no longer have speakers hooked up to my system (seemed to be a problem for SWMHO). Now I've got a great headphone set that works quite nicely. I click. I listen. I bop. She's happy. That's called Win/Win.

I've got playlists on YouTube I put together, depending on my mood. Artist, genre, etc. I log in, pick a list, start it up, open a new browser tab and go about my searching and reading while the music plays on. Works great.

Today, a blogger friend wrote a post that included a link to an online radio station. I checked Pandora and was disappointed. I entered Janis Joplin. (The lady could flat out sing!) They have just one of her songs, Cry Baby. Since that happens to be one of my faves, I'll overlook their oversight. For now.

Online music stations are not new. Some are good and some are very good. If you'd like to look at a few, do a Google... free online music (enter the type of music you want here) radio. Enjoy!

Good for Romney/Ryan or just another publicity seeking opportunist?

I saw part of a clip on TV, supposedly supporting Romney/Ryan (well, mostly Ryan) and wanted to see the whole thing. Attractive young woman, pining for Paul, doing aerobics and in a skimpy bikini. Politics?

YouTube to the rescue! Indeed the clip is online. A parody. I watched. Maybe a little risque to some. I don't think so. It's well below the "Rated PG13" standard I use around here. If you want to watch it, go here. I can't get the thing to upload. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Maredith Walker

I wanted to know more about the young woman. Googled and learned...

Her name is Maredith Walker; actress; went to Wake Forrest and spent a semester at University of London. Part of her resume..."Sports: Boxing... Accents: Southern... Other: Riflery..."

So, she boxes, kin tawk suthurn and shoots guns! Damn! How come she ain't married?

I'm guessing she's a Republican, but I can't find why she did the video. Politics? Publicity? Both?

Whatever, she's pretty, the song on the video is clever (near the end there's a terrible electric keyboard riff), well done (in a low budget way) and I'm not sure it's going to get one single vote more for Romney/Ryan. Not even among men. (the polls say we're pretty much locked up) Big question:  Will it irritate any "undecided" women? (a category that's up for grabs -- please, no jokes) I guess it might/could.

The UN has declared today to be "International Day of the Girl Child."

And if anyone is interested or cares, I approve. Something I don't usually do when it comes to the UN.

"On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world."

The theme for 2012 is "Ending Child Marriage." I approve of that, too.

My wife and I were blessed with two girls. Raising daughters is pure hell for a guy. Our built-in maleness, the thing that played a really big part in us getting married, gets turned all catty-wampus! We know all the stuff that runs around in every other male's head. It's frequently generated/fueled by testosterone. And now, one of the most precious things in our lives... well, I think you know where I'm heading so I'll stop now.

There are more than a few songs about Daddies and their daughters. I don't recall hearing a single one I didn't like or couldn't, in some way, relate to. Another song I like, about girls, was written by an old high school buddy.

Besides bringing something to your attention that I think is a nice idea and, at the same time getting to take a poke at an organization that is probably more screwed up than our Federal Government, I'd like to mention that this is my 100th post.

Making note of reaching mile markers along a blogger's journey through the Blogosphere seems to be a "requirement" for those who blog. I don't know if there's an Official Rule Book for Bloggers" or not. I've looked and can't find one. I've seen something referred to as "Rule 5," but that's the only number I've found. Without going into detail, "Rule 5" has to do with NSFW. Or close to it.

Can we talk Comedy (not comedically) here?

Of course we can. I get to choose the topics, right? So...

I just read an online headline: "11 Awesome Up-And-Coming Funny Ladies You Should Know"
No, I didn't think they were directing that at me, specifically, but I was curious so, since I always enjoy funny stuff, I clicked.

There are pictures of the young ladies with what, I guess, is supposed to be one of their funnier gags. The very first one, right out of the box and rated as #1, has a funny line! But, it's NSFW. A couple of the others are questionable. Curiosity moved me around the innernetz looking for more about the ladies and their humor. More NSFW and stuff I won't use here. But... I laughed a lot! Some great stuff!

Like they say, "Humor lies in the ears of the beholder." To tell the truth, I don't have any idea if somebody said that or not. If they didn't, they should have.

One of the funniest human beings ever on the face of the earth, to me, was Buddy Hackett. Chubby and usually wearing a goofy look, he was constantly popping off one-liners and funny stories. He was on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" frequently. And frequently he'd say something just a tiny bit short of being censorable. Then he'd put on an innocent face, looking around as if to say, "What's wrong? Did I say something I shouldn't have?"

I saw him live in Las Vegas. One of the pottiest potty mouths I'd ever heard! And I laughed so hard my jaws actually locked up. I doubled over and almost couldn't get back up. But the way he did it just didn't seem "dirty." He used profanity in a way that made the use of profanity funny. I thought that was ingenious.

Years later I heard about a young comic named Eddie Murphy. I saw his infamous routine, "Raw," on cable TV. Bored me to tears. It was George Carlin on steroids. Except George was funny. I like Murphy. I've watched him on SNL. His "Buh-wee," stuff is hilarious. I've seen a lot of his movies. I've watched movies just because he was in them. He seems, in private life, like a nice man. Color me Fan.

Moving to the other side of the Comedic Spectrum, I offer up Red Skelton, Abbott and Costello, George Burns & Gracie Allen, Jack Benny, Flip Wilson, Charlie Callas, just for starters, as examples of humor without a single "cuss word" being uttered. On stage.

There are hours and hours of their work on YouTube if you care to sample their work for yourself. I don't think you'll be disappointed. That is, if you don't mind, or you like, "clean comedy."

I think I'll write more about the Subject of Comedy later. Stay tuned.

There are homecomings and then there are HOMECOMINGS!

If this clip doesn't do something to your eyeballs, I don't have a clue what will.

This is from the YouTube site: "The Faile family from Kershaw, South Carolina, was the Columbia Metropolitan Airport Military Family of the Game, set to be recognized on the field. Their first surprise was a message to them from their dad/husband, Sergeant First Class Scott Faile, playing on the video board, followed by an even bigger surprise.

The Gamecocks would go on to beat Georgia, 35-7, just as Sgt. Faile predicted."

Sigh, more Psy's on the horizon?

Ok, I think his 15 minutes are about up, but we may be in for another wave of copy cats and wannabes. The South Koreans are puzzled about puzzled about one of their own, Psy (Park Jae-sang), singing in his native language and starting a frenzy in the USA. What's to puzzle? He dances like crazy, he dresses goofy (unless your dress code originates in LaLaLand), he's got some cute backup dancers, and nobody understands a word he says. Sounds like a winner to me!

Are we ready for more like him? Can we handle it? Will our Psyches explode? Stay tuned.

I have to admit, I did enjoy this...

Maybe he's found a new career

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps showed up at the Ryder Cup competition. This week he was in Scotland for the Dunhill Links Championship and played in the Pro-Am. (For non-golfers, that's a tournament before the tournament, where amateurs pay to play with the pros.) The TV broadcast caught Michael making a 150' putt. (That's half the length of a football field!)

Military Humor

There have been a number of things photographed and videoed by military folks posted on the innernetz that have caused a lot of controversy. My military experience only put me in "harm's way" very briefly. From what I've been told and read, I can only barely imagine the stress these folks are under.

My impression of that stress causes me to think I somewhat understand their need to relieve the pressure. Their relief is often found in humor. At and among themselves, their situations and their living conditions. This video is just a minute, 33 secs. I had to stop and replay in a couple of spots so I could "get" the humor.

If you'll go to  YouTube and type Military Humor in the search box, you'll find hours and hours of clips.

I had a comment...

...from an online friend saying he enjoyed music clips from YouTube. I got to thinking about my high school reunion coming up later this month and some of my musician buddies. A few did quite well.

The guy on this video wrote and recorded the song. It was "covered" by Willy and Waylon and I can't count how many other C&W artists. I think there was even a version with the Chipmunks! The lyrics have been revised to fit a lot of situations, but the melody lingers on.

Ed's discography includes dozens of songs performed by other artists and will be familiar to most of my readers.

I've got stories about the boy, but not now.

The Magical Kingdom of YouTube

The YouTube phenomenon has been praised and condemned. It's got a lot of crap, yes, but I've spent more hours than I like to admit on that site. Most of them enjoyable.

What are you looking for? Humor, politics, Super Bowl commercials, music videos, controversy? It's probably there.

While I was with the Chamber of Commerce I posted any and everything I could find about Seneca. Type “Seneca Kansas” in the search box. You'll find not just my postings, but videos taken by local folks, visitors, and commercials for some of our local businesses.

Want to re-live the Main St. restoration? Watch a parade? Visit some of our local points of interest? How about the annual Car Show? They're all there.

Type in “US Air Force or Navy or Marines,” etc. and you'll find a lot official and very un-official clips. I especially like those posted by our troops. During their breaks from being shot at, troops stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq have created some really funny and creative stuff.

And if it's new and hot, like “Gangnam,” somebody's done a video.

Need instructions about building, repairing or installing something? Check YouTube. Somebody's very likely put together a video.
